Importance of Comprehensive Eye Examinations

clear eyes

Routine eye examinations are recommended for patients who are between the ages of 18 and 64. After the age of 64, it is important to receive a vision exam annually. If you’re experiencing changes in vision, blurry vision, or other symptoms, you may need an eye exam more regularly. During a routine eye exam, our eye doctor will check for your vision acuity, color perception, overall health of the eye, and for nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Common Eye Conditions We Treat

Our optometrist offers various treatments for common eye conditions that can occur. Some common conditions that we treat include:

  • Dry Eye: This condition happens when the natural tears in your eyes don’t provide enough lubrication for your eyes. The eye may become inflamed or damaged due to the dryness. Dry eye can be caused by gland dysfunction, eye allergies, vitamin deficiency, or environmental factors. The condition may be fairly easy to treat, but may sometimes indicate a bigger problem, so it is important to visit our optometrist if you are experiencing symptoms.
  • Pink Eye and Styes: Pink eye is mostly a viral infection, but can also be an allergic reaction or a bacterial infection. The infection usually causes inflammation and irritation and isn’t typically known to cause vision loss. A stye resembles a pimple that forms on the eyelid or inside the eye and occurs due to a blocked follicle on the eyelid.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: This disease affects the small blood vessels in the retina. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness.
  • Glaucoma: This eye disease affects the optic nerve. It’s not easily detected without regular eye exams since it does not produce noticeable symptoms in the early stages. The disease is among the leading causes of blindness in people over the age of 65.
  • Macular Degeneration: This is a disorder that affects the macula and can lead to permanent vision loss. There is currently no cure for this disorder, however, treatment can slow down the progression.
  • Cataracts: A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. Cataracts usually occur gradually, but can severely impair your vision. The effects of cloudiness can be minimized, however, sometimes surgery may be necessary.
